The inaugural Stone Chucker’s challenge event at Gibson Brothers Quarry in Banbridge last Friday evening seen 24 teams competing for the coveted prize. Supported by QPA (NI) and local strongman Sean O’Hagan, the event raised £7220.00 for this year’s Children in Need appeal. The teams, competing against the clock, shovelled 11/2 tonne of Co. Down’s finest stone over an improvised wall 1 metre high.
Team tactics varied, with the choice of ‘long-tail’ or ‘square mouth’ shovels proving critical to the final outcome. Sweat, tears, no blood but a lot of good banter resulted in Team Ferguson/Monaghan recording a winning time of 1 min. 57 sec.
Big Sean O’Hagan (the Man Mountain) managed a lorry pull, tyre flips and dumbbell lifts, entertaining the crowd and challenging those brave enough to attempt these feats.
Special thanks to John Gibson of Gibson Bros Ltd, Gordon Best Quarry Products Association, and all those who supported the event with their very generous donations, and especially the hard working Teams who set the standard for next year’s challenge.
